College Situations Every Student Should be Ready For

Postby SkyeRangerDelta » August 2nd, 2017, 4:15 pm

I've recently encountered a pretty good article concerning various situations that can happen in college. When I say situations, I speak more on the topics of encountering people of different faiths and backgrounds, not the stereotypical alcohol and sex.

Here's the article.

The primary questions that the writer talks about are this:

Be ready to answer:
-What does it mean to be a Christian?
-Why are you a Christian?
-How can a God of love allow for so much suffering?

How will you respond when:
-You have to stand up for Jesus (in conversation or in actions)?
-You sin and someone calls you a hypocrite?
-A professor attempts to deconstruct your faith?

Just some food for thought and a resource my dad shared with me this morning in my inbox. Since I will be going off to college in 3 weeks, this is surprisingly similar to my current situation.

Thanks for putting up with my musing.

Intelligent musings are (or should) always be welcome here. :)

Not a bad article, Skye!

I really like how he says it's fine if you don't have an answer, as some people get irritated at Christians who think they always have the answer to everything. It's kind of okay to be easy to relate to, as long as you follow up some time later, maybe.

one of the primary responsibilities for both pastors and parents is to arm their kids with the tools to face whatever college (and life) throws at them.

So much sense... not to build a bubble and then hope the kids stay inside it...

This might be on our apologetics resources list already, but I'll throw it here:

http://www.comereason.org

Lots of informative, easy to follow talks on current culture issues, including hot button college/higher education topics. I've only been able to listen to/watch a few of them, but I learned from every one. The one that stands out in my mind is the lecture on Christmas; as a child, I was told Christmas was bad, when Christmas is in fact a Christian holiday and was not derived from pagan practices.

(I'm not trying to pick fights with people who "don't Christmas," just noting that if you're going to forbid your children from participating in something, educating yourself and sticking to the facts is always a good idea.)

Halloween according to pops derives from pagan practices. Holidays are confusing.

But yea. I thought that article would be worth sharing. As an ingoing college student, I believe that my dad has properly equipped me...like you say Kes...not with a bubble, but with an arsenal of diplomatic weapons.

I often listen to Ravi Zacharias' ministries on apologetics and whatnot and my favorite one of his lectures was based around whether or not you believe that Time + Matter + Chance has equaled your brain. By that logic, those who say that it does...you also agree to the chance that given enough times and the proper chance, throwing up the parts of a jet liner in the air will eventually come back down as a Boeing 747. I find it shocking that some people do believe that we are here on chance...the chance that can be looked at similarly to, from Earth, shooting an arrow across the galaxy and hitting bullseye about 1 square inch in area.

Ah...I love it. Food for thought.

Found it after looking really hard:

http://apologetics-notes.comereason.org ... dcast.html

iirc, Halloween's early history was the evening before All Saint's Day, when people would dress up as their favorite saints. The trick or treat part was introduced by the Irish of New York.

The occult element is "new" and not part of the holiday until more recently.

What happened to like medieval times when "Trick or Treat" meant that if you didn't give the poor homeless dude food, then they would burn your crops down. That's at least what I read...somewhere...it's been forever.

If you have some legitimate info on Halloween, I'll take a read over it.

So, the link I posted ( http://apologetics-notes.comereason.org ... dcast.html ) is a podcast not written, but it's a fairly thorough summary of the origins of Halloween. I believe he cites his sources... interesting stuff. =)
