Photobucket, what?

Post by NeoJabez » July 18th, 2017, 9:42 pm

Many of you may have noticed a large number of our forums users' signatures reverting to this graphic:

Image

This is not an error. In a hugely (imo) inelegant move, Photobucket has decided that the free 3rd party image hosting they have done for 14 years will now cost users $399 a year. (And they didn't deign to warn you first!)

Your images are still in your photobucket library, and you are welcome to continue using that library for free, but hosting your images on others sites (like forums) is now a pay service.

I do believe that Photobucket might see a small surge of cash as a few of the more well-off people on the internet feel pressured to pay, but honestly...I think this may signal the quick and brutal end of Photobucket. There are dozens of free alternatives, and lots of other options.

In CCGaming's case, for example, we have our own Gallery, and yes, you can host your images for your forum signature here in your own gallery.

Either way, please know there are plenty of alternatives, and if anyone would like a few suggestions, or need to know how to use our CCG Gallery system, please ask your questions here.

Some free alternatives might include:
imgur 20mb Limit (non-gif) 200mb (gif)
imgbb 16mb Limit
Google Photos Unlimited mobile storage, other limits for DSLR or other images.
DropBox 2gb of storage
FreeImageHosting, TinyPic, PostImage, and quite a few more.

Yeah I ran into this the other day.. that's why I changed my sig on the forums.. Whats strange is my ts sig is hosted there also and no issues so far..

I understand its probably a bandwidth issue for them, but $399 is just crazy.. I moved all my stuff off there the other day when I ran into the problem. I would be willing to pay a small fee to support them, but they are out of their mind with that price. I'm sure people was using them for websites that made money. Well it was good while it lasted I guess..

Interestingly, I don't seem affected yet, but that hardly matters, I still have a variety of other means of image hosting, including my own web host, so...

If anyone else needs to know how to use Our Gallery, we do have a tutorial located here: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22600&hilit=tutorial

Obviously, the very first piece of advice in the video tutorial about Photobucket is no longer valid.

I actually didnt have a problem until today. Looks like Ive been affected now too. I agree its going to lose them a ton of users. I can understand the reasoning when they say 75% of their images are being hosted for 3rd parties. But what they should have done is just limit the bandwidth each account can use so only those who are utilizing it as a free host for thousands of images would have to limit their use or pay up. Looks like I'll be deleting my pB account Ive had for 10 years.
