That means that the group you're in on that server doesn't have sufficient permissions to use chat. You need to talk to the server admin and see if he can either give that group permission to chat, of move you to a different group that already has it.

Question: What is the point of teamspeak? I'm brand new to gaming. I know you can talk to folks in game. Where does teamspeak come in? Does it replace "in game" communication?

For games that don't have ingame voice, or in games where the ingame voice sucks. Can't say for CS or LoL, but generally people don't really use the TF2 channel at all, wish more did though. Would be great for times when you're not on the same team as your friends, as well as having much lower latency. (if you care about that)

But in tf2 (honestly the only one I play reliably), if we weren't on server- how would we ensure the integrity of the server?

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean making sure that people follow the rules?

Yes. Maintaining the integrity of the "atmosphere" (for lack of a better term) of the server. I've been on when there are no admins online. Saw two folks on (never seen names before) a few days ago who ask me to leave as they were doing a player very player thing. I don't mind not being where I am not wanted. I've never felt unwelcome by fish folk, so I figured they were just looking for an empty server to abuse one another. I was just thinking out loud regarding the rules if we are all on teamspeak. Again, I'm only talking tf2 as its the only game I'm really playing. Linux limits me just as much as my new gaming abilities.

Teamspeak is like a chat server, but with voice. Imagine you walk into a virtual room and a bunch of people are there, and you can start up a voice conversation with a group of them.

It's used for things much beyond gaming: We have clan meetings, Bible studies, prayer meetings, game and life discussion, or just hanging out. Primarily, it gives you the chance to hang out beyond the game. Rather than a Steam chat window, Teamspeak gives you that opportunity. It is also often where a group of people meet to talk about the game while playing, because Minecraft and LoL and other games don't have voice, but it gives us the chance to bump into them even if we don't play the same games :)

Hope that answers your question. As to other people "taking over" the server when nobody is there, our servers are either open to all or they are passworded. If the admins don't want you there, you will know ;)

That helps. Is that where the Bible study is held?

Yes :) In Teamspeak there are a bunch of "double-clickable" channels that you can join, like separate virtual rooms where you can communicate specifically with those people; the Bible Study channel is one of them (which, if Bible Study happened tonight, actually just ended a little bit ago).
