Anyone Have Advice for Building A Desktop?

Post by SkyeRangerDelta » June 29th, 2016, 3:02 pm

So, thanks for poking your head in here first off. xD
Recently, I bought Fallout 4 along with the Contraptions and Automatron DLC's. I've been working for it since I don't have a job and finally got it. Sadly, the game is too awesome for my computer.

This has finally blown the last Popsicle stand and I am initiating a goal to design, fund, and build a new desktop. The one I have currently is a $1200 gift from my grandfather. Here are the specs:
  • CPU: Intel i5 Quad Core @ 1.4GHz - 2.0GHz
  • GPU: intel HD Graphics 5000 (Integrated, and I was surprised to find out that I could run the Witcher 2 by scraping my gpu against the wall for FPS :P)
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3
  • HDD: Since this is an iMac and I run windows, the drive is partitioned. Out 500GB, 297 goes to Windows 167 goes to OSX. I also have an external 500GB usb that I install most of my steam games on.
  • Monitor: This is an all-in-one, but its a nice backlit-LED at 1920x1080.

I have composed what I believe can be made cheaper, a list of parts I think should work, located here.

This iMac is close to 3 years old, and I am not sure if it will hold out past 5. If you have insight and advice or want to help, comment please! If you have anything else you want to do such as provide personal advice or aid, you can PM me.

Thanks! - SkyeRanger

PS. I'd prefer not to do one of those kickstarter type things...becuase then that would seem desperate and greedy, and I am fully willing to work for it, as long as I can get the work.

I also think it might be helpful to note that I have tried modding the mess out of it for performance purposes, like working on half res textures, shadow boosts, and more, but I believe the only real way to fix this is to upgrade my hardware/computer all together.

The PCPartPicker machine is not bad. I'm not sure how long it will be 'future proof', but not so bad. When I say future proof, I mean...8gb of ram is pretty much the minimum nowadays, as cheap as that ram is, find out how much 2 sticks of 8gb might be.

I've told someone else recently, if you can get a little better than 500w on the power supply, I'd do that too...If you add anything to this listed machine, you'll pretty much be maxing out that Power Supply.

Otherwise, not too shabby, and the case appears to have plenty of growth potential. :)

Yes! I'm on it right now, actually. Played a little bit of Rocket League. Downloading TF2 and CS:GO throughout the night.

Thanks Neo, I'll go and look into that!

Now, the only problem I seem to have is that number at the bottom, $990....any ideas on work in a rural area in the mountains?

Wait, so doesn't "integrated" mean you're using your processor as the GPU? And how does scraping computer parts on a wall help?

Whaaaaa?

Integrated graphics aren't quite using your processor as a graphics card, but it's essentially built into it. It utilizes the system's memory in place of a dedicated set of memory for the graphics card.

The second part is just a joke.
